
While much of medieval Europe could barely read, the cities of Al-Andalus were among the most learned places on earth. The scholars who lived and worked in Andalusia — physicians, philosophers, astronomers, agronomers, poets — preserved the wisdom of antiquity, advanced it with their own discoveries and passed the whole inheritance north, helping to ignite the European Renaissance. Many of them worked within a short drive of Cortijo Bujio. Some of them were born in this province. These are the minds whose ideas still shape the world — and, where the record is thin or the story too good to be true, we say so.

By the 10th century, under the Caliphate, Córdoba was arguably the intellectual capital of the West. Its libraries were legendary. The caliph al-Hakam II kept his in the palace in the city itself — not, as is often written, out at Medina Azahara — with a eunuch named Talid as librarian and a workshop of copyists and binders attached.
The famous figure for that library is 400,000 volumes. Treat it gently. The number reaches us through Ibn Hazm and Ibn Hayyan and finally al-Maqqari, writing six centuries later, and it comes with a companion detail: that the catalogue alone ran to forty-four volumes of twenty pages. Do the arithmetic and you need more than two hundred entries on every side of every page. The historian David Wasserstein's point is not that the library was small — it is that nobody checked the sum for six hundred years. Spain's own national library calls the figure "seguramente exagerada." What is not in doubt is that it was the largest library in western Europe, and that a technology made it possible: paper, carried west from China through the Islamic world, which broke the link between a book and a herd of animals. A parchment codex cost a flock. Paper cost paper.
This is the soil in which the following minds grew.
Al-Zahrawi (Abulcasis) (c. 936–1013) of Córdoba is remembered as the father of modern surgery. His thirty-volume medical encyclopaedia, Al-Tasrif, described surgical instruments and operations in unprecedented detail — and once translated into Latin (by Gerard of Cremona at Toledo) it became the standard medical text in European universities for roughly five hundred years.
Ibn Zuhr (Avenzoar) of Seville (d. 1162) pioneered a more experimental, clinical medicine, testing treatments and describing diseases with new precision. Ibn al-Baytar of Málaga (d. 1248) was one of the greatest botanists and pharmacologists of the entire Middle Ages, cataloguing well over a thousand plants and remedies.
Averroes (Ibn Rushd) of Córdoba (1126–1198) mattered so much to European thought that Latin scholars called him simply "the Commentator" — for his commentaries on Aristotle. He argued that reason and faith need not be in conflict, and his ideas ("Averroism") were debated for centuries in the universities of Paris and Padua, shaping Thomas Aquinas and scholastic philosophy directly. Maimonides, born in the same city in 1138, did for Jewish and rationalist thought what Averroes did for Islamic and Christian. (See our guide to Jewish Granada.)
Two men, a generation apart, wrote variations on the same strange question: what would a mind discover entirely on its own?
Ibn Bajja (Avempace), born in Zaragoza before 1085 and dead in Fez in 1139, was a working vizier and court poet who wrote love-songs, served emirs and was imprisoned at least twice. In between he wrote The Regime of the Solitary, arguing that a philosopher can stay whole in a corrupt society only by withdrawing from it — a book about solitude written by a man running a government, and left unfinished when he died. He also, against Aristotle, argued that the medium is not what makes motion possible but only what resists it, and that motion in a void is therefore thinkable. Whether that makes him a forerunner of Galileo is a real scholarly argument — Ernest Moody made the case in 1951 and Edward Grant contested it — but Averroes read him, and said so.
Then there is the one who is ours. Ibn Tufayl (c. 1110–1185) was born in Guadix, in this province, and became court physician to the Almohad caliph. His book Hayy ibn Yaqzan is one of the earliest philosophical novels in any language: a child is raised alone by a doe on an equatorial island and, with no language, no society, no teacher and no scripture, reasons his way to the whole structure of reality. In 1169 it was Ibn Tufayl who brought a younger man to the caliph's attention and suggested he write commentaries on Aristotle. The younger man was Averroes. Every Latin scholastic who argued with "the Commentator" was, at one remove, arguing with a suggestion made by a man from Guadix.
The afterlife is better still. Hayy ibn Yaqzan was translated into Latin as Philosophus Autodidactus and printed at Oxford in 1671 by Edward Pococke the Younger — whose tutor was John Locke. Locke was in Oxford in exactly those years, working on the problems that became the Essay Concerning Human Understanding, with its mind that begins as blank paper. Locke never cites Ibn Tufayl, and no one has ever proved he read him; the case is circumstantial, and honest scholarship keeps it that way. It is also true that a book by a man from Guadix passed straight through the household of the philosopher of the blank slate. You may make of that what you like — which is, in fairness, exactly what Ibn Tufayl's hero would have done.
(The novel is also routinely called the ancestor of Robinson Crusoe. An English translation did appear eleven years before Defoe's book. No one has ever shown Defoe read it.)
Al-Zarqali (Arzachel), an astronomer working in Toledo and Córdoba in the 11th century, compiled the influential Toledan Tables and refined the astrolabe; his work fed directly into later European astronomy, and a crater on the Moon carries his name. Maslama al-Majriti — born near Madrid, active in Córdoba — helped spread the algebra and astronomy of al-Khwarizmi (from whose name we get the word algorithm) in the West.
Al-Idrisi (1100–1165) was born in Ceuta, studied in Córdoba, and travelled as far north, it is said, as York. In 1138 the Norman king Roger II brought him to Palermo, where he worked for fifteen years. What he produced in 1154 was extraordinary: seventy sectional maps with a full commentary on the peoples, trade and politics of each region, and a world map engraved on a silver disc two metres across. His method was the modern one — he interviewed sailors and travellers and kept only what independent witnesses agreed on. It is why his map, almost alone among medieval world maps, has no monsters on it. He put the Earth's circumference at about 37,000 km; the true figure is 40,075.
Six years later, in a palace coup, the silver disc and the Latin edition were destroyed. Al-Idrisi fled to North Africa carrying the Arabic version, and that copy is the only reason any of it exists. Europe would not translate it again until 1619.
(The famous circular world map you will see captioned "al-Idrisi's map" is not his; it appears only in later manuscript copies, the best-known made three centuries after his death.)
Perhaps the most surprising of all: Abbas ibn Firnas (9th century, Córdoba), a polymath who around the year 875, already an old man, is said to have built a winged apparatus and attempted flight — gliding briefly before a heavy landing, six centuries before Leonardo sketched his flying machines. The airport bridge at Córdoba is named after him.
Ibn Hazm (994–1064) of Córdoba wrote perhaps four hundred works on law, logic, history and comparative religion. The one the world remembers is Tawq al-Hamama, The Ring of the Dove — a treatise on love, its symptoms, its messengers, its secrecy and its ends, drawn largely from what he had watched happen around him at court. It is one of the frankest social documents we have of 11th-century Andalusia.
Everything we know of it rests on one manuscript, in Leiden. His library, meanwhile, was burned in public at Seville on the order of a king. He answered in verse: "Though you burn the paper, you will not burn what the paper contains; which is preserved in my soul despite you."
Whether the book reached the troubadours of Provence and helped shape European courtly love is one of the great unsettled arguments of medieval literature. Ibn Hazm died in 1064; the first troubadour was born in 1071. Nobody has ever documented the chain.
They are harder to see, because the biographers wrote mostly about men — but they are there, and the best-attested of them is Granadan.
Hafsa bint al-Hajj al-Rukuniyya (c. 1135–1191) of Granada is the best-documented woman poet of medieval Al-Andalus: some sixty lines survive across nineteen compositions, ranging from love poetry to elegy to satire. Ibn al-Khatib — the great Granadan vizier-historian — called her ustadhat waqtiha, "the professor of her time." Her most famous surviving poem is a reply. Her lover, the poet Abu Ja'far, had written that the garden, the dove and the river all rejoiced at their night together; Hafsa wrote back that the garden showed them nothing but petty spite, the river did not applaud, the dove sang only for himself, and the stars had come out to spy on them with jealous eyes. She was writing in Granada around 1160. Abu Ja'far was executed in 1163 for taking his family's side against the Almohads. She ended her life in Marrakesh, teaching the caliph's daughters.
Aisha bint Ahmad of Córdoba (d. 1009) was described by the near-contemporary historian Ibn Hayyan as unmatched in the peninsula for knowledge, literary skill and eloquence. She wrote panegyrics for kings, spoke at court, was a fine calligrapher who copied Qur'ans and books by hand, built a very large personal library, and died unmarried.
Lubna of Córdoba (d. c. 984) was palace secretary to al-Hakam II and deputy to another woman, Muzn. Her three-line entry in the biographical dictionaries praises her writing, her grammar and her mathematics, and records that "there were none in the Umayyad palace as noble as her." That is genuinely all we know. The modern accounts that have her annotating Euclid, buying books in Baghdad and teaching multiplication in the street are twentieth-century invention, and it seems fairer to her to say so.
Wallada bint al-Mustakfi (d. 1091), daughter of a caliph, kept the company of poets and wrote verse sharp enough to draw blood — including the line "I am, by God, fit for high positions." She reportedly embroidered it on her robe. She died the very day the Almoravids entered Córdoba, aged about ninety: the last Umayyad poet outliving her dynasty by sixty years, and going out as the door closed.
And in 14th-century Granada, Umm al-Hasan bint Abi Ja'far, daughter of the qadi of Loja, studied medicine, practised and taught it, and wrote poetry. Ibn al-Khatib records her in his history of Granada — a woman physician, from a town forty minutes from this villa.
Look out from Cortijo Bujio and you are looking at a working landscape. Some of the science that shaped it was written down by men who lived in this province.
Start with what is not true: the Muslims did not bring the olive, or irrigation, or the waterwheel to Spain. Rome had all three. The hill of broken pots in Rome — Monte Testaccio, some fifty-three million amphorae — is more than four-fifths made of jars that carried Andalusian olive oil, and olive cultivation reached these uplands in the Roman period. Anyone who tells you the Moors made this landscape bloom from a desert is selling something.
What the Andalusi centuries added was not the tree. It was the attention — and the writing down.
There was a genuine school of Andalusi agronomists, and its most local voice is al-Tighnari (fl. 1075–1118). He was born in Tignar, a village that no longer exists, between today's Albolote and Maracena in the Vega of Granada. He served the Zirid prince of Granada, ran agricultural experiments in the royal gardens of Almería, walked to Mecca by way of Alexandria, Damascus and Aleppo, came home, and wrote a book of twelve parts and three hundred and sixty chapters. Modern scholars value it precisely because it is local — because it distinguishes the farming of Granada and its Vega from that of Toledo on the meseta and Seville on the Guadalquivir. He describes a fertile plain ringed by high, cold tablelands where they grow wheat. That is the view from here. He died in Granada and wrote his own epitaph. Fewer than half his chapters survive.
Around him: Ibn Bassal, who directed the royal garden at Toledo, left for Seville around the fall of the city in 1085, and walked to Sicily, Egypt, Syria and further east collecting plants — and whose book is remarkable for citing no earlier authority at all, because he had seen it himself. And Ibn al-Awwam of Seville, whose great Book of Agriculture covers, by one long-standing count, 585 plants and more than fifty fruit trees. He was mostly a compiler — nearly two thousand citations from a hundred and twelve authors — but not only: "As for my own contribution," he wrote, "I put forward nothing that I have not first proved by experiment on repeated occasions." Among those experiments: grafting the wild olive of the mountains onto the cultivated olive of the plain, and writing down whether it took. Where the agronomy is argued over, the language is not. The channel that carries the water is an acequia, from as-saqiya. The oil is aceite, from az-zayt. The fruit is aceituna, from az-zaytuna. Spanish kept the Latin word too — so the bottle in the villa's kitchen says aceite de oliva: an Arabic word and a Latin word, holding hands, on every label in Andalusia. The Romans planted these trees. The Andalusis named what came out of them, and we have used their word ever since.
Up in the Alpujarras the acequias de careo still do something cleverer: they lead snowmelt across the mountainside to soak into the ground, so that it re-emerges as springs weeks later, in the dry months when it is needed. They are documented from at least 1139 and may be the oldest managed aquifer recharge system in Europe. They are still running. (See our guide to the Sierra Nevada and the Alpujarras.)
The story does not end in Córdoba. In the 14th century the Nasrid court at the Alhambra — under Yusuf I and Muhammad V — became a brilliant gathering of minds:
And in 1349 Yusuf I founded a school for all of this: La Madraza, beside the great mosque. It is the only major madrasa known to have been built in Al-Andalus, and Ibn al-Khatib studied there. You can still go in — see below.
Al-Andalus was not only a place of discovery; it was Europe's bridge to knowledge. At Toledo, scholars including Gerard of Cremona turned Arabic works — among them Arabic translations of Greek texts lost to the Latin West — into Latin, and seeded the Renaissance of the 12th century.
You will often see this called the "School of Translators of Toledo." There was no such institution, at least not in the 12th century: the name was coined in 1819 by a French scholar reading between the lines of two dedications. What there actually was is stranger and better — a cathedral library, an archbishop willing to pay, and a stream of foreigners who arrived not knowing Arabic and learned it because there was a book they wanted. Gerard came in 1167 for one book, Ptolemy's Almagest, and stayed for the rest of his life. His students, listing his work after he died, counted seventy-one translations: Aristotle, Euclid, Archimedes, al-Khwarizmi's Algebra, Avicenna's Canon, al-Zahrawi's surgery.
That transmission is also why a name like Avicenna belongs in this story, with a caveat. The great Ibn Sina (Avicenna) was Persian, born near Bukhara — he never lived in Andalusia. But his monumental Canon of Medicine, like so much eastern Islamic scholarship, reached Europe through Al-Andalus and its translators, where it became a central university text for centuries. Andalusia was the channel through which much of the science of the ancient and Islamic worlds flowed into the European mind.
One last figure, because his story is a warning label for everything above. Ziryab (d. c. 857) was a musician from Baghdad who arrived in Córdoba in 822 and was paid two hundred gold dinars a month at a court where other singers earned ten. That much is solid, and so is his importance to Andalusi music — the root of a tradition that runs, eventually, to the Spanish guitar. He was black-skinned, and the sources are candid that he was mocked for it at court.
Almost everything else you will read about him — that he invented toothpaste, deodorant, the three-course meal, seasonal fashion, the first music school, the lute's fifth string — is modern accretion, traceable to a magazine article, a television documentary, and a 17th-century compiler named al-Maqqari who was working from an 11th-century book of praise probably written by Ziryab's own descendant. We can now prove how it happened, because al-Maqqari's source was rediscovered. Ibn Hayyan wrote that Ziryab was a natural poet — and then added: "But I have never found anyone else to have said that." Al-Maqqari kept the compliment and deleted the doubt.
Do that a few hundred times and you get a man who invented deodorant. The real one is more interesting.
Which great scientists lived in Al-Andalus?
Among many: al-Zahrawi (the father of surgery), Averroes (the great Aristotelian), Ibn Hazm and Abbas ibn Firnas in Córdoba; Ibn Zuhr and Ibn al-Awwam in Seville; Ibn al-Baytar in Málaga; Ibn Tufayl, born in Guadix; and at the Nasrid court of Granada the polymath Ibn al-Khatib, the poet Ibn Zamrak, the poet Hafsa al-Rukuniyya and the historian Ibn Khaldun.
Were there women scholars in Al-Andalus?
Yes, though the biographers recorded them less often. The best documented is Hafsa bint al-Hajj al-Rukuniyya of Granada, whose poetry survives and whom Ibn al-Khatib called "the professor of her time". Aisha bint Ahmad of Córdoba copied Qur'ans and built a large library; Lubna was the caliph's palace secretary, remembered for grammar and mathematics; and Umm al-Hasan, daughter of the qadi of Loja, practised and taught medicine in 14th-century Granada.
Was Avicenna from Andalusia?
No. Ibn Sina (Avicenna) was Persian and never lived in Spain — but his work, and much other eastern Islamic and ancient Greek science, reached Europe through Al-Andalus and the translators of Toledo.
How did Al-Andalus influence Europe?

Did the Moors bring the olive to Andalusia?
No — that is a myth. The olive was already Rome's great Andalusian crop; Rome's hill of broken amphorae is four-fifths made of jars that carried oil from this region. What the Andalusi centuries added was scholarship and technique — men like al-Tighnari of the Vega of Granada and Ibn al-Awwam of Seville, who grafted, experimented and wrote it down — and the words we still use: aceite, aceituna, acequia.
What is the Granada connection?
The 14th-century Nasrid court at the Alhambra housed Ibn al-Khatib (who argued plague was contagious), the poet Ibn Zamrak (whose verses decorate the palace) and the historian Ibn Khaldun. Granada also produced the poet Hafsa al-Rukuniyya, the physician Umm al-Hasan, and the agronomist al-Tighnari, born in a vanished village in the Vega. And La Madraza, founded in 1349, still stands.
